Directories and SEO - Explanations for a Newb?

    Hi,

I'm looking to increase my PR on my site, MotherloadKB.com, and found that directories were a good way to do it. Is this true? And is it good enough to use a free directory or should I use a paid one? Should I choose one with a good PR?

    Thanks, Will

Im not sure how much they increase pr alone, but they help contribute to serps increases, this is of course dependant on other factors, like competition, competitive niches etc.

Choose what you feel is best, free, paid, with pr or not, its up to you.

There's a list of paid directories in this thread: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=120550

They are ranked by front page PR if I recall, which may not be the perfect answer... I'd durn sure work relative price into the equation. It also lists dmoz, which is a free submit but a crapshoot as far as entry. Answer on that one is spend a few minutes doing a submission and then move on to others... then if its added it costs a few minutes of your time and makes a nice surprise someday.

I'll let others remark on the question of effect on PR, not really my field. There are a lot of threads in here with directory lists besides the one I posted above, might read a few, theres a lotta good info flotaing around (ok, theres a lotta bad info too, you gotta kinda watch the reactions of others to see which is which).

    Good luck ~ rj

3 years ago my website is only pr0, and then I submitted to around 1500 free directories, got around 40% approved, and then the pagerank value increased to pr4.

I've found that you can get to about a PR 3 with free directories. You have to attract some natural links to your site as well to move into the PR4 and PR5 range. Just find one of the many free directory lists out there and submit to them for a few minutes every day. You'll be happy with the next PR update.
