Dimensions of a webpage?

Which dimensions are widely used, most in the Web Layout Tutorials section are 760x770 pixels. If I want to make a website, should I use these dimensions too?

    What dimensions do you use?

The dimensions will differ depending on your target market. If you target non-tech people then allow for a smaller screen size. If you target engineers or IT people then you can have a bigger screen size. If your client has an existing site use the traffic stats to see what the existing site visitors have.

1280 X 1024 is still the preferred target these days, unless your target audience has special needs. We have customers that - due to their IT departments - are forced to use lower resolutions, so some of our programs are still at 800 X 600. (Remember, many people are still running dinosaurs like IE 5.5 and Windows 98 boxes.)

A lot of people use percentages not, not fixed widths. When designing something with a fixed width I try to stick to 800-900px, 970px at a push so it doesn't stretch on 1024x768. Some people do still use small resolutions though so it's best to not go too far over 800.

Well what ever size resolution you use, make sure that you have the whole site aligned centrally. That would really help on really large screens and resolutions. Otherwise your site will just end up in one corner of the screen and that looks really really bad.
