go to freenode, channel #digitalpoint first 5 people to join can get the op status! you might have to wait there though, since its not always very active
This is a forum, and IRC IMO has hurt forums, posters feel no need to post, IRC is just then full of newbies wanting people to awanser them stright away, as if they OWE them stuff. Trust me, bad idea.
Sorry, not gonna happen! There's been one unofficial chat room that was populer for awhile...then it died!!! There's also been chat threads...and they were all locked. aka...post about da poster above you threads, and a massive thread contest...then Shawn locked it!!
Haha I like IRC but if we have IRC then the forums would die down a bit and I hate it when that happens.
Not a good idea alot of newbie will join and will ask from where i can apply for adsense etc instead of using forums... Saad
Bad Idea. Shawn is having problems upgrading his servers NOW,imagine the amount of bandwidth to be used just for an irc? DP is a large board, with an IRC you would get a lotta people using it. THIS MEANS MORE BANDWIDTH
I think the idea was that the IRC room would be entirely unofficial, so it wouldn't be hosted on DP servers.
IRC would definately hurt the forum, being if not one of or the biggest webmaster forum, the IRC channel will draw idiots to spam even more and try to offer crap. IRC forum bad idea.
I think it'd be interesting to try, honestly. not as an SEO/SEM/webmaster chat, but as a place for the regulars to stop by and converse. at a few sites I run we do that, and it really results in getting to know people a lot better, and it doesn't detract from the forum activity because we're essentially just talking about whatever comes to mind-- which is rarely, if ever, "on topic."
IRC has about 1 million users according to trackers, across all public servers. the big networks have ~100,000 people a piece.
