This is the magic of this place. In the last months i tend to spend all my evening with the DP firefox window open alltime. So it's contagious. But don't forget that on page 9, everybody gets back on topic. Mixing fun with results. What makes them DMOZish ? Ah ok, sorry
You also have to take in consideration that this is an internet marketing forum with people trying to gain rankings for themselves and others mainly. if you go out in the regular web surfer world, you will see diretories a lot more categorized and with better results. They are more inclined to link to quality rather than to those linking back to them.
When I said directories is a new word for link farms I didnt mean really spam. Honestly I dont hardly ever see "directorys" that are spam posted here. These new directory sites just remind me of the old school link farms that were well organized and edited but still a farm of links
Well, other esteemed people, define link farms, as : So what if the directory does not ask for a reciprocal ? Like most do ... ?
Definitions of link farm on the Web from Google Define: Link Farm * A link farm post large amount of unrelated links on their site. Link farm sites and the links that the site provides are pretty much useless and not worth adding links to. (aka FFA - Free for All). www.intensedevelopment.net/website-design-L.html * A set of web pages that have been built for the sole purpose of increasing the number of incoming links to a web site. This is done in order to increase link popularity and search engine rankings. www.redfernservices.com/glossary_of_terms.asp * a site created solely for search engine ranking purposes that consists almost entirely of a long list of unrelated links. These types of pages are penalized by almost all search engines. www.abelgraphics.co.uk/glossary.php * A site that features links in no particular order which are totally unrelated to each other. Links on pages like these offer no link popularity benefit whatsoever. www.pr3.co.uk/seo/seo-glossary.php * A recent term used to describe some link exchange programs. These programs are nothing more than random links on a page and really do not help one popularity. Can be considered spamming. www.accordmarketing.com/tid/articles/link-building-terms.html * This is not a place where you want to be. In theory, you would submit your site to these places solely to increase your "popularity" (the links coming in to your site). Actually, if you are there then you can expect the reverse to happen. Search engines will likely penalize you -- maybe even ban your site -- as they consider this tactic to be spamming. So, how do you identify such places? www.rocksolidsite.com/glossary/I_O.htm * A link farm is a group of separate, highly interlinked websites, which manipulate link popularity or PageRank with the goal of improving rankings. Link farms should be avoided during a link garnering campaign. www.prowebster.com/L-Q.htm * On the World Wide Web, a link farm is a large group of web pages created that contain hyperlinks to one another or a specific other page. Link farms are normally created by programs, rather than by human beings. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link_farm
blackbug If you know all there is to know about building a niche site, why are you asking me? Surely you must have all the answers? Your first problem is your tea making facilities! You may want to convert it to a “beer joint†(Whilstles? You must mean whistles?) Guess that is what happens when you’ve conquered the world, no? Like I said, a niche directory encompasses, AS I SEE IT AND WISH TO INTERPET IT, reflective of a common market/industry/community/theme/topic or what ever you want to call it Yes, absolutely! You can definitely build stronger thematic links from niche and thematic sites than non theme sites. For everyones benefit. Are you not more likely to go to an Automotive parts store, to look for and buy a differential or hard to find part for your vehicle, instead of a supermarket or a 7-11? While you are at the automotive store you'll probably browse to see what other things you can purchase for your car. Maybe I should have said they “allow†to build – whatever - You are entitled to your thoughts and your opinions. I don’t slam, people for their opinions, and if you feel it necessary to question me or my practices, great, have at it! Sorry I don’t offer escort services on any of my sites! Please visit your automotive shop for all realated automotive parts and services. Make them paid listings or have them become members in order to list instead of having a freely accessible listing form that can be auto filled by any joe blow, but again that’s common sense right ?!?! Hmmmm I’ll take a shot in the dark for this one … ummmm …. a focused COMMUNITY? I’m not trying to convince you of anything. You should know, you have niche and broad reach directories. Figure it out! I have several sites/directories and know which ones take me more time to maintain. Or you’re just bored and feel like picking people’s postings apart. Here’s your third for the day … Listen, there is lots of material and literature available online around what we have been discussing. Everyone applies the info as they see fit. Yah sure some might be based on gut feeling, but the majority is based on documented resources. Anyways have a wonderful day!
I think Google hand picked all those definitions, to state that they are garbage But i guess you are right, the most part of the story
If it want be big as yahoo or dmoz than I don't see the porpuse to create genarall for-all-kinds-of-sites-directory. And if your making a niche than you can add all sites manually since there won't be much relevant sites that asks for an inclusion I wouldn't class it for a directory
Actually, what I said was that people would spam the directories, as in submit loads of crap. My directory is also hguman reviewed and edited so none of it ever gets listed but that doesn't stop people from submitting it. The point is, if DP had one, someone would have to go through and delete all the submitted spam, that's all.
But if you add a directory, you'll have to do both. It's not like spam posts are ever going to go away
Minstrel ... you are correct! You can not totally eliminate spam submissions BUT you can minimize them by not making your submission form public. I have an extra step where users need to become members before they submit. That in itself curves the spam submissions. The spam submissions that I do recieve get a nice polite message that say "Your submission is inappropriate for this directory. Try using other more relevant online directories." I never get the same clowns submitting ever again.
AND, I doubt the members here will spam a DP directory. Especially if you had to have at least 100 posts and a green rep to submit to the directory.
