Well, I've learnt a new word today: thematic.

Cool, anyway. All those things you've said up there. You know them for a fact do you?

They all sound like "they're 'common sense' so they must be true" facts to me.

...and how does "Niche directories are more succesful in the "paid listing" arena." help anyone other that the directory owner?

Well, i skipped the first page :p

Shawn, you;re already doing a lot of things. Don't waste your time on a directory. That's my honest opinion.

As you said it yourself, if you invest your time in the tools, the forum, some new areas, or EVEN for yourself and your own free time/family, that would benefit us all :)

Damn, two people rolling their eyes at me today. Anyway, what's that bloke/woman from Battle of the Planets got to do with it...

You can hint all you like. Niche isn't some magic word that you'll conquer the world with (hmm, the irony). Anyways, I know all the supposed benefits of building up a niche site with bells and whilstles and tea making facilities.

I'm bored of this before I even write it, anyways:

    > imo niche directories encompass an entire site not just a sub category or a piece of a site.

No, not at all. They can be a section of a niche site. What's your point?

    > You can build very strong thematic links more so from niche sites than a general purpose broad directory site.

Firstly, can you? You know that for a fact? ...and... For who's benefit? You know for a fact that search engines look at the root domain of a site and they "that site is all about subject x" do you?

    > You would also get more targetted traffic and more page views from within a niche directory.
    > You're viewed totally different by users of that niche industry/community.

    Facts?

    > Niche directoires also let you build and grow that site into a niche community site.

Let you? I'm sure they don't prevent you. You're in fluffy land. Or caught up with a buzzword.

    > The value of niche directories are significantly more than broader directories. Niche directories are more succesful in the "paid listing" arena.

That's nice for the owner who has convinced the listees that niche dir backlinks are worth more. If they provide traffic, then wonderful, that's more valueable than a backlink, but that's not what most people are paying for.

    > You're not flooded with garbage listings

Rubbish. I've got a niche directories on an already existing sites. They're flooded with all sorts of crap sites all desparately looking for that magical backlink. What does a well stocked niche directory on a niche site offer over a well stocked niche category on a general site?

    Nothing.

    > and can be vented by humans relatively easily.

Eh?!? (And I'm not picking up on the spelling of vetted). Are you trying to convince me that a general directory is more maintainable than a niche one?!?

I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong. I'm saying you've got nothing to prove that you're right other than gut feeling. Or have you?

In general use, the term "niche directory" refers to a directory of sites within a circumscribed are/topic/theme, as opposed to a directory of sites in all or numerous categories.

I get submissions where no category is chosen at all. I would force a selection, but it just gives 1 more reason to deny crappy listings :)

Well at Webxperience! i get really messed up things.

I think 50% of the submitted websites, are in the totally wrong category.

30% of the remaining 50%, are submitting their website to Shopping/ or to Computers and Internet/ (possibly to get a higher PR page, in their mind)

10% of the remaining 20% are really websites built for adsense .. Nothing more than links and adsense.

I think 3-4% of the links, i can hit approve, without any intervention.

And those are from Vilcencer, Will and others, who know their stuff :)

Well, I don't know what you guys are thinking (a directory, where people can post their own listings?!), but the directory I run (http://www.hustlerpanties.com/lingerie-directory/) is not spammed or scammed because I actually review each site.

What makes you think that I or others are not checking each URL by hand ?

I have 6 editors (pre-Illumirate, Skaffe, Joeant and Dmoz even), some of them being mentioned here. Others wanted confidentiality :)

And getting you spammed doesn't count wheter you check or nor websites. Because they don'y need you to submit spammy websites :)

    Right ?

Right mate. I get these web directories a lot too :)

Yeah, what's that got to do with the points being made?
The issue was scope, not definition.

I still say directorys are just link farms... wether good or bad.. a good one is just a well organized link farm.

    Just imo...
