Did you do any analysis before coming up with those numbers?

How much does DP net a month? According to some estimates, DP nets approximately $50k a month, which comes out to $600k annually.

So how did you come up with a valuation range that you did? How much would you pay for a business that can generate $600k in discretionary net income?

Depending on the owner's involvement, standard valuation methodology dictates that small businesses typically sells anywhere from 1x to 5x net income (EBITDA), taking into consideration the type of business, stability, liabilities, good will, assets, etc...

When people buy small businesses, doesn't matter whether it's a dry cleaner or a web site, they buy it for the monthly cash flow, and the expectation of future cash flow. So when you are saying 2x net income, what you are saying is that the new owners, with some level of involvement, can expect to recoup his original investment after 2 years, and realize the profit after that mark.

Also, it doesn't matter what you want to buy DP at. We operate in a free market economy. Both the buyer and seller have to agree to a market price before the transaction can be consummated. Valuation is one thing, but agreement is another. Founding owners often have emotional attachment to their businesses, which superfluously inflates the value of the business in their eyes, some times even to the point of absurdity. Just ask Jerry Yang.
