Does digital point have mIRC? if so, what is the server/channel, if not, why?
Most of you would have heard of it, i believe it would bring the community together more tbh,
    http://www.mirc.com/
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIRC

It's used be thousands for different catagories, such as, gaming, scripting, programing, clan channels, it's not like these chats for 12 year olds looking for a girlfriend or whatever, it's fairly mature, and can introduce you to new things.

    Thoughts?

mIRC is a Windows application. IRC channel is what you are talking about I'm assuming.

This is a forum, not an online chat. What sort of "new things" could it introduce you to that you couldn't be introduced to within a forum? I can only think of disadvantages to an IRC channel vs. forum to be honest.

IRC channel would have only disadvantages.

However, a forum which contains also chat functionality would be a first, and absolutely magnificent.
    I mean:
Each thread will have a live chat box on top where the people that are active in the thread can also chat in real time. That would be extremely cool. The starter of the thread will be the operator of the box (being enable to ban abusers etc').

How come nobody thought of it before?
Only high traffic forums like DP are suitable for a thing like chat.
I am an ASP.NET developer with experience in custom-made AJAX live chat coding (http://apps.facebook.com/chaostrivia , http://www.chaostrivia.com)
So if you consider switching to DP from php to ASP.NET, consider the chat functionality done :)

Thought about on-site chat functionality, and while it would be a step up from IRC, still has a lot more disadvantages than advantages. For example, people find out about the forum because they are finding topics they are interested in via Google search.

Hmmm, I think it would be nice to have mIRC channel but it might need a lot of work and people who are welling to be there 24/7 what do you think?

Each too their own i suppose, just wanted to know the thoughts on my opinion :), i agree with Love*, that you will get a fair few people coming in "Tell me tha secritzz!!", but i've used mIRC for about 7 year now, and I've had a lot of fun getting to know lot's of different people, different views, sat there amused at peoples differences. Was just a thought anyhow...

I agree, but also some people would be using it to do things that would be against the forum rules (affiliate sign-up links, false I-trader exchange deals, etc), plus far FAR easier to scam someone in a chat room.

Would become a nightmare to even try to moderate.

A nice idea in principle, not so good in practise IMO.

Yeah, the Mods will have to find Machine Guns loaded with Infraction bullets to get the spammers/scammers. There will be people spamming every second. That's why I used "Machine guns" because they are capable of shooting lots of bullets every second.

Not to mention the incredibly moronic "click my ads! & I'll click yours!" - "Ok! I clicked yours, now click mine!" Aahh, could actually be more entertaining than I thought. :p

I still think that it would be extremely cool if the forum software will do the following:

In very hot threads, where there are 3 or more "Currently active users viewing this thread", a chat will be opened on top. The chat moderator will be forum mods+thread owner. People who just login will also see a box on top: "Hot threads being discussed live:" The chat closes with 2 or less active users, and never re-opens. Then, the content of the chat will is posted as a simple post.

This takes some good amount of coding... I have experience only with custom-made ASP.NET AJAX chat (i.e. my site chaostrivia.com), if I knew php I would have volunteered for the job :)

I don't think a chat would be a bad idea. I mean, it would be easier for people to chat about website related stuff or just casual chat. Namepros has a chat type thing and it works out great for them.
