    Hi all,

Newbie here, haven't really explored the place that much, but either "banned" is a popular user title, or a lot of bannings go on here.

So I can avoid the ban hammer, can anyone point out a thread that explains why all the bannings? I've read the the FAQs and they seem fair enough, so it's hard for me, a newbie to this place, but not to forums, to figure out where all the bans come from.

    Thanks.

    Well FAQ/Rules is here : http://forums.digitalpoint.com/faq.php

I believe that sums up many of the rules here on DP.

Just like most sites, don't spam, don't post silly topics that are useless, etc.

    You'll be okay :)!

Firstly, we must read the rules first because different site or forums, it have a different rules too. May be another forum not very strict but all of this depend on their forum's management on how to control their forum.

So, we as a users need to follow the rules that already stated.

Some forum have a thread or forum with banning info and reason. A site like this might find it useful, if a lot of bannings occur, for others to peruse as case studies.

In the meat world, punishment for crimes has two components.

    1. To extract a penalty upon the evildoer.
    2. To send warnings to others that that type or specific evildoer's action has consequences.

If the # 2 feedback loop is broken, because it's opaque, then there is a higher probability of others "doing evil" because they don't realize their specific behavior has been classified by the society as evil.

For example, let's say Berkely, CA passes a law that wearing a republican t-shirt is grounds for immediate execution. The law is posted, but because no who lives in berkely cares about republicans, or are one, then the law gets no comments or high visibility, other than "being on the books" (AKA " in the FAQ").

so along comes a republican tourist, wearing a republican t-shirt, who gets lost getting off the 405, and wham, the police arrest him, take him out into the bay, and dumps him overboard. End of story. The only ones who know about the deed, are the folks who happened to be on the same street when the hapless tourist was picked up. They don't care, because they are democrats, and they aren't breaking the law. It never makes the news.

And then along comes another tourist, another disappearance, and another, and another and another. The cops start broadening the rules, defining as "republican" anyone who has something nice to say about Tea Partyers, for example.

A lot fewer republicans in Berkely, but somehow, the word never gets out, or is impressed upon the rest of the world how serious it is to be a republican in Berkeley.

Non public bannings are a lot like that.

Just my opinion. Your money may vary.

I just don't want to get caught up in a sweep that I would avoid if I could.

I've been banned before, but it was because a co-worker logged in under my user name and reposted a thread that i had already posted earlier that day. :/

But if you read the F.A.Q's, you should be fine. Hence the keyword HENCE! lol
