Hi is there a way for an outsider to differentiate whether a site is hosted on vps or dedicated server? Does VPS has unique email server like dedicated one?
cloudnthunder, Yes, normally the VPS has a unique email server just like the dedicated one, so an outsider can not differentiate whether your site is hosted on dedicated or vps. -BlastFree
I am running an ecommerce site and all my competitors is using dedi so I want ppl to believe i am on dedicated server, but i also dun expect much resource to be used at first so I dun mind using vps if outsiders dun know.
They wouldn't even know if you were on a shared host either, particularly if your site worked on a dedicated IP address. There's no real way to tell what type of hosting a web site is on for someone just visiting the site for the average user. We have several e-commerce stores on our shared hosting servers, with some of them doing very well for themselves, so who cares. Don't worry about it, just get the hosting that is most appropriate for your web site.
If you have a dedicated IP, there's no real way for other people to know if your on a VPS or a dedicated server.
Imagine a server as your own computer (which it really is, just with bigger RAM, CPU speed, etc). VPS: The hard drive, RAM and CPU resources of this computer are divided to a few users (usually about 5), each having his own share and his own Operating System (OS) installed. Each user's VPS works as a separate PC. Dedicated Server: Giving the whole computer to just one user. He has full control of the server and it's resources. Shared hosting (cheapest) works like this: The host has 1 computer with a lot of users and websites on this computer (usually, thousands of sites per server). Now you probably can imagine what happens if one of the users decides to run some resource heavy script - all other users and their websites suffer from slow loading and downtime. Also, users are not given control of the server's configuration (because that would also affect the other thousands of sites on the same server). Having dedicated IP as the people above recommended is a good option to hide which one of the above you are using (although I don't see the point in hiding it, why would you look what your competitors do? The important thing is to satisfy your visitors and keep a good profit - you can't do that by spending all the earned money for an expensive server).
