There are many PPC search engines out there. Google Adwords is popular for the simple reason that more people use Google than any other. It also has a vast content network. Yahoo is another as is MSN/Bing. With those three, you reach maybe 90% or more of people using search engines.

There is also localized search engines (city specific, country specific) which may be good. Many of them, if not most, buy Google's or other search engine's data. Social network sites (Myspace, Facebook) could be good too depending on what you sell and your target market.

I recommend to my clients that they start with Adwords. It has 75% of the market according to some studies. The interface is relatively easy to use, although the setting up of a campaign the right way is tricky for beginners - most people set their first campaigns up the wrong way and lose money.

I have tried both Yahoo and Microsoft offerings, but didn't find them worth the time when there is so much traffic on Google - if you can max out Google with the traffic that you need, then maybe consider the other options.
