I was wondering if anyone had some insight as to why SERPs vary so much from google.ca and google.com - I'm really liking the .ca SERPs!
    cheers

    Different datacenters = different results

Just like you can do a search for "dog" in Canada and a search for "dog" in Italy and get different results from google.com (because they use different datacenters)

thanks aaron - my understanding is that the DCs usually synch up - is this correct?

I believe the goal is to be sync but I doubt they rarely are.

from my experience the serps e.g. between google ca/com/de/it vary like some 30 positions (also depending on kw), (unfortunately) never saw these serps sync; besides that there are differnt dc envolved, this is also due to the fact that google trys to reflect serps specific from the country where they originate from. So e.g. searching for mushroms in France, a french page, hosted in france should show up better, than a canadian competitors page about mushroms in France, always assuming both sites were built using the same seo etc.

It's not a question of different datacenters per se. It's a matter of (a) competition, and (b) geographical specificity.

    Searches for psychologist:

    Google.com Results 1 - 10 of about 22,600,000
    Google.ca Results 1 - 10 of about 1,570,000

    Searches for ottawa psychologist:

    Google.com Results 1 - 10 of about 360,000
    Google.ca Results 1 - 10 of about 137,000

Sites with a .ca extention (or sites hosted in Canada) will be boosted a few spots in the serps when searching with Google.ca. This is done normally even when the search is not restricted to Canadian sites.

interesting results for my keyword - i just check this morning

    google.com Results 1 - 10 of about 43,400,000
    google.ca Results 1 - 10 of about 43,300,000

    google.com SERPs = 17
    google.ca SERPS = 6

I guess I shouldn't bitch about the SERPs but it would be nice to crack TOP 3

I had a similar thing with one of my sites. It's mostly regional, google thinks your site has something for Canadians, or you have some links from .ca sites
