Different page index count for different Google locales

I'm trying to figure out why the number of pages indexed by Google for my site is different for the different Google locales.

For example, doing a search for "site:[mydomain]" returns X number of pages when I perform that search from google.com, but Y number of pages when I perform the same search from google.co.uk.

I've tried this with many other Google locales as well, and the numbers are slightly different. Would anyone know why this might be?

My guess is that it's a replication issue ... that is, it takes a while for the indexes to be replicated from one locale to another. Although it would be nice to know if there is one locale that is updated before all others. And no, google.com does not appear to be the quickest.
