I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, so sorry if wrong. I was just wondering if anyone could answer my question why sites have seperate URL's for different parts. ie forums.digitalpoint.com, digitalpoint.com etc, does this help with SEO, thanks

Jimmy, you are getting into the area of subdomains. Obviously www.digitalpoint.com is the primary domain. forums.digitalpoint.com is a subdomain of digitalpoint.com as would be tools.digitalpoint.com. Subdomains allow a webmaster to compartmentalize their pages into logical units at the same time branding, in this case with the phrase digitalpoint.

There are pros and cons of using subdomains. Search engines see them as a seperate domain so to rank well you have to start from scratch in regard to gettinng backlinks for the subdomain.

If you search google or this forum you will find debates regarding which is better, a sub domain or a subfolder.

Hi Smyrl, thanks alot, it sounds as though I have got alot of reading to do! You lost me when talking about compartmentalize and logical units. I was just wondering because I am re-designing my site and I currently using subfolders, presumably it would be alot of work for me to start firing links into subdomains :)

Jimmy subfolders receive a trickle down effect from your main established domain name. They are usually easier to get ranked quicker than a subdomain. My first web site houses basically five unrelated webs. Each web is in a seperate folder. Were I to start over they would all be on different subdomains. At the time they were done I had never heard of a subdomain. Some like folders, other subdomains. Here are a couple of threads alluding to the issue..

:) Smyrl, can I ask, if you were in my position where it is not to late to create the subdomain's for the site would you be tempted to go for it. I have still got lots and lots to do to the site, but I think it would break down quite nicely! here are just a few examples:

    forums.pure-australia.co.uk
    visas.pure-australia.co.uk
    insurance.pure-australia.co.uk
    hostels.pure-australia.co.uk
    etc

    what do you think?
