Agreed, no SERP benefit or just a little, but PR could be passed as usual! Verified!!

This is good to know, the "Verified" part especially. :)

Personally, I like to use each visit as efficiently as I can... so interlinking sites of interest to my visitors is key. Why spend time and money trying to get a 10% increase in traffic via SEO when you can introduce those visitors to other useful sites?

You then create an environment where those same people are now logging more pageviews within your network and you are getting way more opportunities to show ads and sell products to those people.

That's why I think FAST, RELIABLE HOSTING is key. I know how much I hate slow to load sites.

I also understand those who are concerned about SEO, if I was competing for keywords that brought in 1000+ daily uniques, I wouldn't risk it for anything... I'd find another host. Currently, I care more about PR than keywords because a few of those site generate ok revenue from link sales and are good at launching new sites.

Thanks again everyone for your input, a lot of good info in this thread!

Don't worry having 1 host won't affect you. I believe it to be a google myth

One thing I have learned when it comes to hosting is that you DEFINATELY get what you pay for in the industry. You pay crap and you get crap. The loss of income you would get with a crappy host can go towards a better hosting solution.

So let me get this straight in my own head. I can understand that SE's *might* be looking at WHOIS info for duplicate info. Now if what you say is true regarding the the web host (WHOIS data contains no reference to the webhost) then SE's would have to be checking out the owners of IP addresses/blocks.

While it is probable that SE's are looking at IP's, I personally doubt that links between sites (different WHOIS, different C-class IPs) on the same host are blanket filtered. Why? Well in many smaller countries (like Ireland :)) the main ISP (usually the incumbent TelCo) will often be one of the largest hosts (this is a legacy thing - mainly older sites). I think that the idea that no link value is passed between such large numbers of sites is somewhat unlikely.

Of course, this isn't to say that there penalties based on host don't exist. Just that they are probably executed on a selective basis.

A blanket penalty based on webhost is very unlikely IMO. I could imagine blacklists/whitelists of hosts however.

However, I will stand to be corrected on this. :D
