    Hi,

    My Wordpress Site stats plugin and Google Analyitcs plugin gives me different result fro the same site. I have earlier tried with some other thirdparty tracking script and that also gave a completely different data.

    So if that is the case, which data we need to believe and why that variation occurs. The variation is not negligible but quite noticeable.

    Neither analytic mediums is 100% accurate because each is measuring different things.

    For example, Awstats works from the actual server logs and does its best to extract information from that. google is only tracking those of your visitors with JavaScript enabled and so will miss out on around 6-10% of your visitors completely.

    In any case trying to estimate such things as unique visitors when all you have to go on is the IP address (where the same address can be used by many different people and the same person can have different IPs at different times) will give different results depending on exactly how it determines whether multiple page loads are likely to be the same person or not.

    @manish,

    Can you track persons based on the IP address in Google Analytics, if so how?

    No, Google forbids the tracking of users by Personal Identifiable Information (ie. IP address), and in order to use the Google Analytics system you must agree to it's TOS, which states this condition. The data that you receive within through Analytics is aggregated data. Google does however provide geographical data to give you a more clear understanding of your users and their locations, but it lacks the specificity that the IP address would grant.

    However, there are some custom ways you can keep track of IPs of visitors by adding some PHP code in your website. I am trying it now so couldn't confirm whether this works or not.

    Each analytics program uses different techniques to track data and not all of them give accurate data. But still, they vary by very small things. Google Analytics is the mosr trusted.
