Different Ad Formats = Different RPC?

Discussion in 'Publisher Network' started by DEone, Jun 30, 2006.

I've noticed that on my site, certain ad formats have a much better return than others. These ad formats display the exact same ads from the exact same advertisers as the other formats on my site, and don't really get any more impressions/clicks than any other formats I use.

Yet these 'hot' formats earn, at minimum, 10 times what other formats earn.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so, would those 'hot' ads continue to return so much more if I used them more extensively throughout the site?

I think this is not true. The advertisers put their top bid in, and thats it. It all pays the same, because it doesnt matter what size the ads are ;)

    (My opinion)

Yeah, that would certainly seem to make sense... I've always thought the same thing. but it doesn't explain my situation described in this thread starter...

And considering that YPN doesn't currently use any kind of smart pricing, etc I found the difference in prices to be odd.

Am I correct in thinking that YPN just pays a straight-up percentage of earning per click and doesn't factor in site traffic, click-thru-rate, or impression counts? If so, I still find it odd that certain ad formats are returning so much more per click than other formats displaying the same ads.

I don't want to give too much away (heh!) but I was thinking that perhaps ad formats that only show one ad will return more than formats displaying multiple ads...

    Thanks Inferno

I'd love to hear other opinions

Well heres a smilair Question in the same vein, but do people notice more money and clicks from more than ad placing?. I have been told the more ads you put up, the less money you make, due to the fact of more less paying ads showing up.

    hmmm...

can't say I have experienced the more ads = less money

even if i have 5 or 6 different YPN ads on a page they mostly show the same advertisers in each ad format on the page.

I briefly experimented with limiting the number of ad units on my pages and didn't see a change

Just wanted to add that if you place more ads on a page, you "might" get less money. This is the deal, if you get more impressions on your ads, and get less clicks, you WILL get less money. If you have only a few ads on your site, that means you get less impressions, which means more per click ;)

You guys understand what I mean?

More impressions = Less $$ per click
Less impressions = more per click

More impressions means less cpm

How do you know which ads pay the best unless you are clicking them yourself?? :) Is there a checker on your YPN account page? If so, what is it because I have never found one.

What are you talking about? If you have more impressions your CPM drops, everyone is suppose to know that .... BTW, we are talking about the reports. The RPC is shown inside of your reports ;)

    You see it?

yeah, but im talking about RPC, not CPM... with yahoo, as i understand it, they dont care about number of impressions vs clicks when it comes to RPC...

    or am i wrong?

    im a bit confused.

lets say i have 1000 impressions and get 2 clicks for 40 cents...
the rpc is, duh, 20 cents.. and the cpm is 40 cents

    am i right so far?

are you saying that if i have 100 impressions and 2 clicks that the RPC will likely be for more than 20 cents? i realize in this case the cpm is much greater but i thought that cpm wasnt a factor in rpc with yahoo

this stuff has always left me foggy!

if anyone has any links where i can learn a bit more about this, id appreciate it

thanks for the input so far

    not sure what you mean...

i make extensive use of the reporting categories so that i know what ad categories/formats on what pages of my site are being clicked.

if you arent doing this, i highly recommend it. i figure that once i have a better grip on how impressions affect cpm and how/if cpm affects rpc, ill be in good shape because of the category tracking to optimize things on the site...

im not sure which advertiser ads are being clicked to generate the money im making... i just know which of the ad categories ive defined are being clicked... and for the most part, all of my different ad categories show the same ads from the same advertisers.

nope, i never click on my ads... i even have code to not display the ads if im the one viewing the site.
