Difference in Overture and Wordtracker results??

Discussion in 'Products & Tools' started by Redleg, Sep 9, 2004.

I just wondered why there's a huge difference in the Wordtracker and Overture results sometimes ??

Normally they're about the same, but sometimes the results are way off..
(and it looks like the Overture results are wrong all of those times)
I know that Overture doesn't make any difference between singular and plural.

A few random way off examples:
    Cow
    Student Looan Debt
    New Car Purchase
    Birthday Flower
    SEMrush

Yep, different databases is going to be the biggest difference. Also, Overture consolidates plural forms with singular but Wordtracker does not.

But that does not explain the major difference (120k pr day) in the cow example??

The last time I checked Wordtracker was using DogPile/MetaCrawler's searches performed over the last 60 days to provide their results and of coarse Overture uses its own which may explain the discrepancy.

{shrug} I only report the data, I don't compile it. You probably would need to contact Overture and/or Wordtracker for a definitive answer on a specific keyword.

I don't complain at all about your tool Digital, but I just can't understand why it's such a big difference between Wordtracker/Overture sometimes.
(not just on your tool, and the cow thing was just one example of many....)
Most of the times they are almost the same.

I've heard rumors that it's possible to "beef" up the Overture stats a bit, by sending out a lot of automatic searches etc...
    (or something like that)

I've also found some keywords that have showed a 35k+ difference pr day between W and O, and the Overture keywords ended with "text text text".
(can't remember what words right now)

The reason why I'm so curious about this is that Overture stats are often used as one of the factors to determine the value of domain names.
And when suddenly someone "found out" that that the word "cow" was searched for 3,000,000+ times pr month in Overture Cow was regged in all possible (and impossible..) extensions, since it had to be a REAL valuable keyword.. :)
And that have happened to several other "valuable and popular" keywords as well.

Most of the times when I see a big difference between W and O i go for the wordtracker stats, since they seem to be the most accurate ones...
But I've only noticed these huge differences the last couple of months, never before.

Is it just a glitch, or could it be something else??

I've noticed similar things on other keywords.

I even noticed one keyword which showed as 5000+per day in Overture a few weeks ago, and now Ovreture reports that it doesn't even get 100 per day.
