yes, they could be different if your backlinks are pointing to www and some for non www.

i suggest you go to google sitemap and choose the association you need. strong suggestion is dont set any association

i also personally like www. because most of the time i feel, the NS and the website updates quickly on www. rather than the http:// which takes sometimes days or atleast hours after i make changes to my site via FTP.

True when I move host, it takes http:// forever to catch up with the update.

Out out pure convenience and repetition the first thing I do when I'm setting up a site is add the htaccess code to remove the www. automatically (the code that was posted earlier in this thread is the exact same thing I use).

Doing that ensures that you'll get the max "PR Juice" and that your backlinks will all go to one place :)

When adding this code are we making it so only the http://domain will show up or the www.domian will show up?

I personaly prefer the www infront of it and want to always use that one.

You can let google consider your domain with both "www" and without "www" to be the same.

Go to Webmaster Central and there is a option to change your "Preferred Domain".

I just tried adding this code to the htaccess and then tried it.

When I went to http://mydomain.com it took me to http://www.mydomain.com/public_html/

Wow can I fix this so it just goes to the main page and not some internal file folder?

What is the "$1" part in the code for?
