This is a good rule of thumb and may not apply in all cases. sale= visitor clicks through to merchant and makes a purchase within cookie time. Money is exchanged. You get a % or some stated amount for the sale. lead=visitor clicks through to a merchant and completes a form, requests a quote, or similar action. Information about the person is exchanged. You get some stated amount when all of the steps for the lead are complete. Car insurance companies are a good example. You get paid when someone fully completes a quote. click=some clicks on a link from your site, no further action necessary. Clicks usually pay a lot less than the other two.
