Difference between Link Farms & Directories.

We all know how harmful link farms can be to our beloved links....

Our site (NexCards) has been submitted to hundreds of quality directories, as one should...

Now I'm just curious as to how or if search engines can tell the difference between link farms and directories.

    Any takers?

My first response would have to be.... the spelling? hehe, Just kidding - Link farms are just a huge unorganized collection of links. Web directories are categorized and for the most part - quality links.

It's simply categories with content that is niche per category. A link farm is a bunch o' links that aren't necessarily similar.

I'd say most link farms aren't categorized or organized like directories.

Having a bunch of irrelevant links on a single page without content would send a red flag to Google that it is a link farm. Also, link farms are usually littered with ads and/or popups.

Directories on the other hand, are organized by categories which tells Google that there is some structure there. Also, each link is accompanied by a brief description which adds relevant content to the directory.

    My 2 pennies :)

I won't say much--but Link farms are without sitemaps whereas directories have well laid out sitemaps!

    Having opened this topic.

My question is World Clouds with dopped domains. Since I even saw some Website Owners bought World Clouds from drop domains with Chinese Writings and Beauty Parlor domains as for example. I even saw one World Cloud in Link Sales with a MILF Edition. (PORN turned into Word Cloud  )

Could these links help to be a Stong Website ?

Thanks in advance for an explanation as I really am very new to this ?

it all really depends whether the pr stays upto date, but most of the time no it won't help but obviously a site like Alive Keyword will probably show up in the search engine and very well help u too..

Directories are way better backlink than link farm because link farm doesn't matter if its PR 5 ... the page's strength is divided into those 100 links whereas directory PR 5 with inner pages PR 4 and so on give more strength to the links.

Those word cloud sites with expired domains will lose their PR by next update because they've changed the contents of their website. And, as you mentioned, many of these domains have no relevance to a word cloud site.

I think word cloud sites are quickly becoming the next version of the link farm. I wouldn't recommend buying any links from these sites unless you know that their PR was derived from the original site (ie. 500words.com)

OK. I understand. Alive Keywords is still and continously being promoted by Chris. What about those Word Clouds that after it made some few bucks don't even try promoting the site. Is it valuable to invest on those ? Or are they just good for the time being ? If so then its just a waste of hard earned money.

So what about Directories that are crowded in the Category. How would you subdivide the PR Strength that you can pass to your submitters.

I bought a link on a Zero PR page in a sub category of a PR8 site but shows as my Strongest Backlink. Why is that ? You mean a quality Site is much better ?

    Thanks Smub appreciate that.

i'd say yes it is a waste of money buying a word cloud when the new owner is not going to put any work ... and just looking for quick cash...

Directory Strength is a main thing when it comes to Directories...

you put a case that ur pr 8 link is one of ur strongest link ..

well if u take a PR 4 site and take its PS and take a PR 8 PS ... Pr 8 probaby takes it by far ... thts y its ur strongest link ...

PR is one of the biggest factor in the PS but other than that backlinks and soon to be strong sites are good too :)

    hope i cleared everything

I have heard that badly managed directories can get you penalized so I would stick to established directories. I hate saying that because my directory is pretty new.
