what is the difference between link: and links: command at google?

link:site.com shows fewer results as compared to links:site.com

I've never really used the links: operator. But it appears that at Google link:site.com shows a sample of external links only and that links:site.com shows a sample of external AND internal links.

They don't really matter. Both are really the same to me.

    I don't think so.

Link: operator is the command to see backlinks your site have. but when you type it as links:sitename.com then it is searched like a keyword. I mean to say google will search pages with phrase "link", "links", "sitename" etc. This will obviously show more results because it is now a generalized search query rather than a command.
