a link is a link that goes some were to another page or website while a backlink is a link back to your own website.

dofollow links allow spiders like the google bot to find your website and give you more ranking power so you want them to be a dofollow link and from a related website which makes it high quilaity

Link means something that take you one website to another and back links means that point back to your website from different web page location. Links are of two types do follow and no follow back links.
Do follow back links are waited by Google it transfer traffic and link juice to your website.
No follow back links only transfer traffic to your site.

Backlinks are links that are coming from other site pointing to your site. There are two kinds of links outbound and inbound links (backlinks).

Webmasters need a combo of both nofollow and dofollow backlinks. Google ssays so, how would it look if a website only had links that were dofollow? It would look like spam. Make your content and flow of traffic look natural and organic. The google algorithm is too smart so stay away from black hat SEO techniques.

I don't get why a lot of the first few posters threw some bull at you.

To the original poster, what Icecube_media said was right, a link and a backlink are the same and they boost your site's rankings.

link is just a name of hyperlink.
    backlink is inward link .
Why people do ask for dofollow link, is because Google spider able to through your site from that link if is dofollow link.
If nofollow link, Google Spider are not allow to crawl through the link to your site. So it unable to give you a high score for the backlink.
