Link means a url or name of site(clickable) if you click a link then it open something backlink means your links in some other web pages its from same domain or different domains CLEARED ?
link is just a name of hyperlink. backlink is inward link . Why people do ask for dofollow link, is because Google spider able to through your site from that link if is dofollow link. If nofollow link, Google Spider are not allow to crawl through the link to your site. So it unable to give you a high score for the backlink.
