A dropped domain is one that is free for registration again. An expired domain is one that has passed its renewal date without the renewal fee being paid. it then moves into a grace period with some registrars (approximately 30 days or so) during which it can be renewed by the registrant for just the renewal fee. Then it goes into a redemption period. The registrant can still recover the domain but the fee will be typically $100 or more. If the registrant does not recover or redeem the domain, it goes into the deletion cycle. It goes Pending Delete for approximately five days prior to being deleted. Then it drops and becomes a dropped domain. Most good domains (generic, keyword or domains with a lot of backlinks) will not be dropped - they will be snapped up by dropcatchers and auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Google 'Domain Lifecycle ICANN' for the ICANN explanation/chart. (I can't post links yet as I don't have the requisite number of posts here.)

    Regards...jmcc

No, You can sell it but before that you have to own it.All the great domain names are not available and owner has the right to sell it for handsome money.
