Did you stop clicking on Adsense when you learned how it worked?

Before I knew about adsense, I dont even know if those were ads. Now, since I have adsense myself, I hardly click on it. Unless the ads is very interesting. :)

I never click on Adsense ads anymore, mainly because I know that I am a browser and don't want the advertiser losing money on a non-buyer like me! :) But, I do visit sites advertised using Adsense. I just hover over the ad, have a look at the status bar for the URL and then type in the URL myself. I don't think CTRs will drop though as not many people understand how this all works and the whole "right click, copy, paste" or "hover and type" might seem easy to use but is a very advanced concept for a high percentage of web users to comprehend.

I sometimes handle helpdesk calls for a company as part of their web support team and most people who call are absolute beginners and somehow manage to use the net .... mostly by luck. Someone shows them how to use a site (Yahoo, Hotmail or whatever else they use) and they use it the same way all the time. If any site changes it's format or functionality, they have a panic attack and start ringing helpdesks. So, I don't think the CTRs will drop in the future (well, not because of this reason anyway).

I click on Google ads when they have something useful or interesting to offer, or when I visit sites from where I get free benefits, such as those offering amazing freeware. Click their ads or download firefox is as a way to say "thanks" to the webmaster.

Concerning my own ads, I have decided to reduced Adsense exposure to 25% or less. This means that I will leave Adsense and Google search running in less than a quarter of my whole domain porfolio.

Because I have too many sites and the little spare time to develop them is used to attend my clients instead, I need another revenue solution instead of wait 3 months and up to generate a check that my bank cash out after other 3 months to "make sure" Google has funds :/

dfsweb, not every website needs you to buy their ebook. I advertise my game site just for exposure.. hopefully people will play.. :)

That's true. I didn't say I don't visit their sites. I might visit your site AND play ..... and you wouldn't even have to pay Google for it!!

Montel, you have grasped the wrong end of the stick here, Adding images has NOTHING to do with confusing the browser.

I will explain the basic procedures of publishing (It is the same online as offline with newspapers and I was a publisher for many years before selling up).

This is the procedure we always follow:-
    image
    headline
    sub-header
    copy
If there are more than one image on the page, then we will chose the photograph. If there are more than one photograph on the page, then we will choose the one with humans in it (it is basic psychology, we are social animals ). Of course the size of the image will affect which we chose as well. Finally if there is ANY movement on the page we will look at that first (again basic psychology, we are hunters and movement needs to be checked for threat/prey).

So Adding images to a page simply draws the eye to the images, then the natural progression is to a headline. Adwords has a bolded headline, so it catches the eye! If the advert is well written then it will get a good CTR

I still click on ads that interest me, although I'm less likely to just make casual clicks now I know they cost the advertiser money.

If I am truely looking for something and I see an ad for it I may click. That would most likely be on Google though. One of the reasons webmasters don't click ads is because they don't "need" to. We rarely get lost online and know where and how to get around.

The majority of the general public doesn't even view text ads as ads, but simply as links to go somewhere they are interested in going. Even somewhat "tech savvy" people even do this. My wife is very computer literate yet when I see her looking for something online I find it amazing how she clicks with reckless abandon lol

Almost agreed with you, but if I found relevant title then I click. Even if know the whole process cycle.

simple rule, if the ad is for something I'm looking for, I will click, otherwise let it be.

I agree with you 100% here. My day job is in software engineering and deployment and it amazes me how many tech-savvy IT professionals there are out there that know next to nothing about the internet, how it works and how money is made from it. Just the other day I got into a debate with one person because he said the whole PPC model of online advertising was the old way of doing things and nobody pays for clicks anymore but rather they put up banners and pay per "impression". I couldn't believe my ears! He had it all backward and he looked truly amazed when I proved to him Google's entire existence is based on PPC.

I didn't stop clicking just because I found out webmasters got paid and someone's paying. if I'm legitimately interested in an ad, I click. same as before.

however, webmasters & tech-savvy individuals tend to 1) ignore ads and 2) be more skeptical of what they read, and less likely to click. I think this is why certain tech industries have lower CTRs.

google's huge advantage was that it got around banner blindness; users weren't used to text ads, they didn't instantly identify them as ads.

as adsense gets more common, this is unfortunately bound to change.
