I must have seen that film about 4 times and I still can't figure it out!

There are a lot of strange things in that movie and I'd like to hear everyone's opinion on this...

Here are some strange parts of the shining that I can't quite figure out:

At the beginning of the film the employer tells jack torrance (jack nicholson) that there was a murder in the hotel. The guy that killed his two daughters was named charles grady. Later on jack torrance meets with a guy called delbert grady... was he the guy that killed those 2 girls? or was he just another guy with the same surname?

At the end of the movie, you will see a picture of jack torrance taken in the 1921... that just goes to show you that somehow he was there at that time. What does that exactly mean? was he being reincarnated over and over again?

Those are the 2 most difficult parts of the movie. I can't come with a simple explanation of them :/

I saw this movie quite a long time back.I think delbert grady is a ghost who drives Jack crazy enough to murder his family. As for the picture is concerned may be after after dead Jack also joins the set of ghosts haunting the hotel.

Yes delbert grady is obviously a ghost but still, the film doesn't explain who he really was before he died.

You've got to give stanley kubrick credit, that film has a lot of different explanations. No one has been abl;e to completely figure it out...

Yeah, Kubrick said in an interview that unlike his other movies, that this movie wasn't meant to be deep or thought-provoking. The book is actuality better than the movie and Jack's desent into madness makes more sense.
