yes, newpaper ad and press interview make huge different ..... , before UV<10, after >5k daily UV but it won't last long (btw this happen in Malaysia, i'm not sure abt western)...
Yeah, I agree But these kinds of advertising campaign are too expensive, it only lasts several days then poof.. it return to low number of visitors.
I guess it depends on the kind of site that you have. I have one job site that I had advertised on the local paper and the traffic I got was simply outstanding. Obviously though, this is because lots of people are looking for jobs and they just needed to be introduced to my site to come flocking to it. I don't think though that my article site will benefit from the same strategy because in my province, not many people are looking for free articles.
