Did google destroy years of my backlink building by changing from .com to .ca?

so I have my local construction business website made on a blogspot blog and lately i noticed my rank dropped from first page to 3rd or 4th page for certain search phrases.

I checked my site and the address changed from blahblahblah .blogspot.com to .blogspot.ca

you can still type in the .com address and it redirects to .ca.

But all my backlinks I created. hundreds over the years are for the .com
Now if i backlink check on the new .ca address they gave me I dont have one backlink.

are all my backlinks worthless now?

I have a domain that redirects to the blog, and am wondering if i should build a new site and start the backlink building over not on a blogspot. but on a website builder of some sort.

thanks for the responses. that site was the lifeline of my company and business has dropped :(

Why the heck did you choose a free service to your business. A domain name + dedicated server are cheap.

The redirect is only for visitors within Canada. When viewing the domain in the US they will likely see the original url. If Google is using the .ca version in their search rankings, you're a bit screwed. Changes like this are exactly why you should've just setup a real website from the start. With a free host they are able to change anything they want without consulting you. If it were me I would bite the bullet and build up a new website with the domain you have. Having clients see a .blogspot.ca address looks unprofessional anyway.

yes i was naive and thought that a social media platform like a blog would make my business stand out from the dozens of cookie cutter websites out there and for years I was number one for many competitive phrases linked to my biz.

I was wondering why my phone was not ringing off the hook as usual and that is when I noticed the slump my site took in its rankings.

I am going to shut down the blogs and transfer the content over. I may keep the blogs up but have minimal content and link to my new site.

thanks for all the info and opinions and would love to hear more on the issue.

You can try setting up a redirect from the .ca to the .com, as a way to save the site. But at this point, it might be better to create your own site by registering your own domain and getting your own host, then redirect from the Blogspot URL to your new site.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!

Always invest in your business. Self hosted is the way to go. The only thing to really do is to redirect the old one to the new one and build new backlinks again for the latter.

Sorry to hear this OP - but as others have said, you really should look into getting your own web hosting.

i have several other sites self hosted and I do have a domain name that masked the blogspot blog.
Its gonna take time to regain the number one spot with my new site but in the end will be very much worth it.

I wish I had gone self hosted from the start lol. Oh well we live and we learn.

Im wondering If I can just copy and paste all the old content to the new site and then delete the old pages or will it some how be seen as duplicate content by google?

I will add new content as well but would hate to shoot myself in the foot before the race begins
