hi I'm an SEO in israel, and over the last couple of months nearly all of my clients and a large number of major sites in israel (co.il domains) have lost 40-50% of their indexed pages.

i have a client that in the month of may had 46,000 indexed pages and today he stands on 5,000 indexed pages only!

a few worth to mention points:
the drop in indexed pages is a wide affect on a very large number of sites, including authority sites on a number of subjects.

the drop is NOT accompanied with a drop in rankings or traffic, so i think it could only be a tweak in google's algorithm...

did anyone notice something like this?

Yes, I've noticed the same thing on a number of sites. There's a couple of threads over on the Google section on the same topic. There have also been PR drops for a number of big sites like DP and BrotherSoft.

whats also interesting is, that the rate between the main google index: site:example.com/*
    and the suppelmental google index:
    site:example.com
    actually went up!
some sites lost up to 50% of their suppelmental index, but gained more pages in the main index...

Ya, you are right for a one website the indexed pages suddenly dropped a few months ago. But now it has started to pick up slowly. Even yahoo says the same results as google and I don't know whom to trust.

I wouldnt worry about it - unless you are losing traffic/rankings.

Have you seen a drop in traffic?

Why not email Barry at Search Engine Roundtable?

He is Jewish I believe, so might be inclined to help - plus he is a massive legend :)
