Dialup modem issues

I'm using an XP computer that we've gotten (from a friend of mom's at work) to see if we want to buy it, and I can't get online. When I click "Connect To" and our connection, it will click, not get any dial tone, say "no dial tone", and click again. This happens whether plugged in or not, so I'm assuming it's a modem issue. I've tried different COM ports, different settings for everything and the troubleshooter tool it has with no luck.

Thanks for any help and if I can't get it working I may just reload XP; it's got a whole lot of junk on it anyway and seems to have a few errors.

Is the moden set for pulse dial or touch tone? It has been so long since I have had to change that setting I have no idea how to do it at this point in time.

Try reinstalling the modem and then setting up connection.

check if the phone cable is faulty.
If not, try inserting the modem into a different PCI slot.
Or firstly uninstall the driver and remove the modem. Them reinstall it again without having the modem pluged in. Then shut down your PC and add the modem, turn on. the driver will be detected automatically.

I think the phone line may have some fault. Try to connect a phone to the same line and check if it works. If it does then its a Modem issue.
    Thanks,

Re-install your Modem driver & check the following:

    1. Check your phone cable!
    2. Uncheck "Wait for dialtone before dialing" from your modem properties.
    3. Use "Query Modem" to check the connection between PC-Modem.
    4. Done!

Take one phone and connect it with that line ( the one you connected with modem), If it has the dial tone, then Change the Modem, if not, change the line.

There might be another issue but generally if your Modem is faulty, then it message prolly be "No Modem found or something" but in you case it says " no dial tone", so it must be wire fault.

    Good luck

I know what I would do if I were in your shoes....buy a gun and end it :p b/c I'd consider doing that if I still had to use dial-up

how about trying to uninstall and reinstall the driver?

It says no dial tone, so the modem seems to be working correctly, but...

I guess I'll have to find a driver online.
