Diagnosing a dead server

My dedicated hosting has fallen over (see any of the links in my sig) with even the backend server login being out of action. As far as I am aware I've not been slashdotted etc, but the host (HostingLizard) seems a bit slow.

This is the first time I've had such a problem, so I'm not really sure what the next step is for me. It doesn't help that my main contact email is set to an address hosted on said dead server...

Yes, I popped them an email and they rebooted the server for me. It was the apparently relatively-frequent cpsrvd failure, and the auto-reboot mechanism didn't work. However, I now know to ssh into the box and reboot from the command line.
