I would like to start devoting more time in developing my resources directory. Can anyone recommend a good link manager program? Basically, I would like to acquire the links myself, but need a program to organize, categorize, etc. Also, unfortunately, I am not the webmaster for my site. Is there a link manager program that could be installed by my developer and that I could then control? Hope this makes sense. Thanks.
There are many free scripts available for link management. I would recommend you either PHP Link Directory or SkaLinks. PLD is quite powerful and is used by most directories, while SL doesn't have as many features but is easier to use and comes with some cool templates. There are also some newb-friendly programs like Arelis that could help, but generally it's not a good idea to use desktop software for link management. Hope that helps.
PHP Link Directory probably the most advanced from free scripts. You may want to check out Chipmunk directory, phpwebscripts.com, linkscaffe from gonafish.com and hotwebtools
cplinks, gossamer threads, esyndicat, site sift, particle links, barracuda, plus the ones named in posts above I maintain the links for select free and seo friendly at http://www.vscripts.net/scripts/directory-scripts/, 8 at the moment
use reciproclamaneger 3.3, autolinkspro, linkmachine. They are really great. What others are saying those are directory kind a script. But what I mentioned they are links managing software. They are completely automated. Send meails automatically, validate links, uploading links to your server, supporting cron job and many more.
In my opinion they have one big disadvantage - links pages generated with these scripts can be easily found automatically by, for example, Google - and thus these sites can be easily filtered out.
