Developing for Handheld Devices

Can someone recommend a comprehensive, authoritative source for developing pages for handheld devices? My technique thus far has been simply to create an additional style sheet for the handheld media type, but there are many details I still don't have: What rendering engine do handhelds use (a variant of IE?), what limitations do they have (color depth, exact pixel resolution, etc.), what language is best to use (HTML, HDML), and so forth. With no comprehensive reference, not even a PDA or Web-capable cell phone of my own to experiment with, I am essentially fumbling around blind.

There used to be simulators that would allow you see what your work would look like on a phone, on a PC.

In Firefox developer extension, and in Opera, use the small screen rendering mode. If you use wireless markup language (.wml), Opera can render it.

    cheers,
