How do you determine the type in potential for a particular domain? Are there existing tools for this?

I don't think that there are such tools, but I would be happy if anyone knows of one

If I was going to build such a tool what features should it have? How would it get the info?

    inventory.overture.com

Search for the domain name WITH the extension.

    For example, type in "google.com"

It gives you a good idea, at least, on a relative level.

That coupled with alexa if the domain is expired (Negating backlink effect if possible)
