I always make 1024x860, only sometimes 1280x1024. I usually refer to the client.

Best you can go wit full screen 100% width (flexible for all screens).

    why not?

Just create a gradient effect layout and slice them to smaller image then give it as a background and repeat them in x or y direction. (make the div to 100% width).

You can't obviously design a 100% width layout in Photoshop, but you can design a layout that supports it.

However, variable widths like 100% do have some limits in terms of design. Nothing wrong with fixed layouts, although you should nearly always design under a width of 1024px. :)

Width 960px for the main content - works on all resolutions as fixed width.

In photoshop open a document anything over 960px wide. I usually go as wide as possible so when I preview, I see the amount of background that a user on a large screen should see.

My latest design is 1480 x 2048, but the main content is within the 960px region, in the center.

i usually build with a width of 980px - this seems to fit well in most browsers... most displays can see more pixels than that - but 980 wide is a very safe width. I also design with 100% height... in other words - infinite height...

~750 px when doing fixed width, if it's for a more technically oriented crowd I will go to ~960 if something forces me to do fixed.

As a rule, though, I prefer fluid designs.

when i begin creating a website i usually set my canvas to 1000 x 1000, meaning i have a good width to work to and enough vertical space to go down the page. i usually end up increasing the height as a i go, but it's definitely important to work to a width below 1024 (unless of course you are building a liquid layout).

Hi karthimx, ive not worked on it yet and have mostly been gathering a lot of info recently to get a better understanding of how people are choosing and working with various layout sizes, its interesting the differences that people are using.

    Thanks also Vekseid and matt5409

I am a fan of fixed-width-layout, and the most used desktop resolution today is 1024x768.
So i use that size for my photoshop canvas, and then I put line guides, set 960px or 980px for main layout width size, the rest width is for background.

Previously all are used 780px width and nowadays all are using 1000px width.

Height is not a problem, thats based on your content on home or inner page.

My suggestion is 1000x650px for without scrolling website.

    Thanks.
