Ive been looking at the free wordpress templates and I wanted to make my own design, I've built my own html websites in the past, is there anything I need to know specifically about creating a wordpress blog design?

There are tons of tutorials online about how to design templates specifically for Wordpress. It's not really that hard, as long as you understand some basic PHP. And even if you don't, just understand how to work in HTML code within PHP blocks and you should be more than fine.
Html and php are totally differnet languages and morever php is too much ocmplicated as compared to html. So, to design your own template, you should have to learn php first and then take a tutorial by googling.
