    Found this story on digg.
Read the post to know how a designer lost his domain to a hacker.
    http://www.davidairey.co.uk/google-gmail-security-hijack/

I felt like quoting a part of that blogpost here, but its a long post.

Do you think that there is any chance for David to get his domain back?

I've had major problems with a registrar not auto-renewing domains, one by one the would expire and I had to wait on hold for an hour just to tell them to renew.
Point being, choose your registrar wisely.

If you live in Florida, you might be able to scare the hacker:
To find out exactly where the hacker lives in Florida, go here:
    http://ipgb.net
    Search this IP:
    207.36.162.100

    That's the hacker's IP.

It shows a map with his exact location. Feel free to go over there and kick his ass.

Anyways, THIS SUCKS!!!!! I think the guy should ask google to get involved as this all started because of google's screw up.

    I agree with RichUser.

David may be right in saying that he is not going to pay even $0.02 to get that domain back. But it doesn't make much business sense to loose your main domain especially when you offering a service and have built many customers through it.

If David is not ready to pay to get his domain back and really wants to win agaist the hacker, he must go to court.

Just my opinion. I could be wrong.

The ICANN definitely needs to make it easier to resolve cases like this without the need to go to courts...

I don't think so. By paying that hacker, he would be encouraging him (hacker) to repeat the act in future with others.

Whatsoever may be the case, David id getting tonnes of visitors on his current domain (.co.uk one) because of this whole issue.
    He is popular now.

Heh, even the registrar I worked with in a previous life couldn't figure out how
to resolve such disputes in as fair, timely and reasonable manner as possible.
What more an organization that tries to address multiple stakeholders?

David does have a chance. Whether that'll happen or not remains to be seen.

I doubt that it would affect the future work of the hacker. I am pretty sure that if the David doesn't cave in and give the money, that the hacker would still go on and do the same to other's. Not everyone has the same views as David. I'm pretty sure that 3/5 or 4/5 people would pay the hacker back the money. The way I look at it, I would just admit it to myself that the hacker did his job too well, and that I have to pay the price for that.

The registrar usually has an enormous amount of control over it. If the hacker doesn't change the WHOIS data, you should be able to recover it no problemo.

    Look,
This "hacker", most likely has access to tons of domains and emails, and if he receives an e-mail saying "give my domain back", then he will send a response with an outrageous price.

He will keep going down in price because he has so many domains.

Just negotiate with him, get the price down to little as possible, then buy it from him.
