To be honest, for a blog about design, it's not very inspired. Even if the content is original and well written, it's not presented in a way that says it's from anyone that knows anything about design.

And the footer links at the bottom scream "Free theme. I didn't spend any time or money to design or customize my own blog. But I propose to tell you how to do it".

I think you could do better. You need to show off some of the expertise that you proclaim to have.

I would buy a nice theme from Themeforest for $40. But I understand a lot of people don't want to or can't do that, so you have to work with what you have.

If you have design and photoshop skills, the first place I would start is a logo. It's the first thing people see and gives the first hint at professionalism, color, and design skills.

Also images. If you have some basic to advanced skills I'd edit the template to show featured image thumbnails with each post.
    This article may help: http://nenuno.co.uk/creative/wordpress/adding-post-thumbnails-to-wordpress-3-0/

Nice images are HUGE. They can make all of the difference in the world.

I'd also finish the footer widgets, maybe stylize your "About" widget with an image or a logo.Try and make the length of them symmetrical.
I'd probably use a different set of social icons. Something more "artistic".
    Add a favicon.
Change the sitewide link color so that they all match and fit the design changes.

There's a lot of little things that you can do to personalize and stylize what you have. If you are a designer, you'll have to open your mind and use your imagination.
