    hi
I'm wondering if there are any design rules or recommendations about combining single column and multiple column layout on the same page? Actually in this case I'm referring to a column for a skyscraper. Rather than having white space where the skyscraper is not we'll use a different section of this page to occupy the width of the page.

    i.e.
    section 1
    content skyscraper
    section 2
    c o n t e n t [full width]

    Any comments please.
    thanks

Do you mean a layout like this?

Of course that is acceptable. In fact, if done correctly, it adds more interest to the layout of the page. Really you will just be creating a two column layout with a section of the page spanning the entire width. Newspapers, magazines and websites do this all the time. They create a grid system and stick to it. Check out the 960 grid system which makes creating websites based on a grid way easier.
