I usually get free templates because I'm not very good at creating my own. If you are good at making your own then you will known your site is unique in the design.

I just used an existing template and modified it to my liking... That way it was easier for me to learn about the code and stuff...

Lol for me it is the opposite.
I am good at coding not designing.
Anyway coding is not that difficult.

The best thing is to download a template which is similar to the layout you are going to use. Then start modifying that template.
It will still lot of work.
You need to be well versed with xhtml and css. Knowledge about php isnt really required though.
It's not possible for everyone to design a wpress template. And, getting a unique template done can be costly.
There are tons of free templates out there. I dont really see any harm in using them. Opting for a custom design makes sense only if you have a popular blog and you need a unique look.

I would say design your own using the wp default theme as your base.

    Good luck

Exactly what I did. Found a free template, then modified it enough to be unique and to fit my website.

If you have a good knowledge of HTML then its better you make your own template for others i think choosing the template is the best available option.

I think you'll get more satisfaction out of having your own style/design/template... and if you're not so good at coding but OK with design then there's no time like now to get your head around it :) Start easy with hacking an existing base template and build it up...

I just used an existing template and modified the css file and the sidebar. You can reconfigure all your template when you modify the css file.

I would recommend that you use a default template first and start writing your blog first. After you are comfortable with writing your blog, then you can adjust your template to your liking.

thanks for all the posting from u guys, my mind is going to be clear day by day on most thing,
for example if i start my first blog on wordpress or blogger n than when i feel easy with coding than get my domain n start writing on it, but some one told me that if u do this than u will lose all ur links n contacts, because u will enter again with new domain, so it can be problem for you ??
    what you guys suggests ??

    thanks

Get your own domain from the start. Installing wordpress is a snap - get a theme that looks close to what you want and then modify it to make it perfect.

Yeah, I second that: get your own domain straight away. I ranked #1 for a popular term on my blog when it was in a sub folder of one of my existing sites. When I bought a domain for my blog and re-published the same articles there instead, even with 301 redirects I dropped out of the rankings for that term and never recovered. So to avoid even the possibility of that happening just get it right from the start, get your own domain and start blogging there :)
