Descriptions when searching

    Hi,

I always thought that the two line desription that comes under the title on a Google search was taken from the "descripion" tag or, if there was no description tag, from the content of the page.

We manage a site www.selquin.com and the description for the home page changes depending on what you search on. Three examples are below. The top one displays the description in the description tag

Any idea why they all display different descriptions?

    Display Cabinets - http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=display+cabinets&meta=&rlz=1W1GGLL_en-GB&aq=f&oq=

    Retail Cabinets - http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&rlz=1W1GGLL_en-GB&q=retail+cabinets&start=10&sa=N

    Shop Cabinets - http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&rlz=1W1GGLL_en-GB&q=shop+cabinets&meta=

It's always been at google's discretion. In those cases it's obviously trying to match the keywords searched for. At 207 characters your meta description is a little on the long side - I've always found btween 120 and 130 characters works.

it happens when you optimize a page for several keywords and you dont put all those keywords in the meta description so google grabs the text area from your page and displays only this.

I think this is quite a normal thing. I see such thing for my sites too. Sometimes, Google show a part of my description tag content plus some content taken from the body.
You should not worry about this.

If the keyword is not in the description, Google mayb show a part of the page that match the keywrod searched.
