I just noticed that SERP display "description" from meta instead of "on page text". Is this something new for G?

Do we need to pay more attbetion to "description" tags now?

I personally think it helps, especially on pages where my customers primarily list images only. I use both the description and abstract tag.

I am still seeing many sites displayed in SERPs displaying meta description word for word.

TIP: Try ending your phrase with

It has been like this for a long time. Google just decides what for a search term is more relevant... The on-page text, or the description tag. When a page is made in Flash or something like that it always shows the description. I use decription since the beginning of it.

interesting enough, most of pages on www.google.com don't have any meta tags at all.

It depends on what search term is entered... Google will display a snippet containing the search term wherever it finds it: the oage title, the description meta tag, on-page content, even the URL.

But you're correct -- I think all pages should contain a <title> tag and a "description" tag.

I noticed G used my anchor text description as its snippet, word for word, for one of my SERPS results.

FYI*By anchor text description I mean the text that follows my anchor text on IBL's.*

    Anyone else noticed this?

From what I've seen, Google seems to display the snippet that contains the word(s) of term searched for, even if it's just part of the search term. If the term isn't anywhere on the page (i.e., completly off page anchor text), then the meta description is shown. I don't know what they do when there is neither a meta description nor any part of the term on the page.

Google is using new technology in serps now http://www.wilsonweb.com/art/promote/google-lsi.htm

Go and search for 'tour canada' pay attention to the bold text in serps. Then search for the same phrase using tilda or ~ '~tour ~canada' Now look at the bold text in serps. This is proof that LSI is being used now.

What does this mean?? Alot. It is time for major changes in your SEO approaches. I personally think that those that don't understand this will be dust in the wind in the next few months.
