Is there any limit in the description of the meta tag? Or it can be as long as you want it to be? Any recomendation on how long it can be?

    Thank You!

I believe you want to stay under 150 characters for your description tag. Some engines that use it cut it off after that amount so there is no need to have more then that. There is no real limit though, you can make it as long as you want but I do not feel it is very beneficial to do so.

I think 25-50 is enough and shouldn't be considiered as search spam. Anyway - that is not so important for G. - they can just ignore that if it will be spammy. What do the others, it can be different.

Having a very long description/keyword meta can make your site look spammy, therefore not indexing how it should.

Don't think too much about the length, just make sure that you are not spamming. Suggested length= 250-300 characters

There is, it must be less than 200 chars.
Google no longer "relies" upon this tag, but will often use it....:)

If you try to stuff it with loads of keywords or keyphrases, chances are that SE's might call it close to Keyword stuffing or spamming.

Limit it to what you actually are targeting .

up to about 80 characters is about right i think. any more than that and the search engines cut them off anyway.

    Hi.

We will always aim to keep the meta description under 30 words.

There of course is no defining optimum amount of words, but why would anyone risk being penalized by the search engines?

Obviously SEM is largely based around the manipulation of the search engines, but fundamentally the key is still to produce quality driven websites.

A well managed and professionally researched website should really be able to condense keywords and copy into fewer than 30 words in each pages Meta data.

So my advice would be to try and stay under 30 words max.

I suggest your meta description will be short, but it really describes what can see in your site...

Google does not use this tag in rankings period. Go count yourself how many characters are displayed in any given search engine, that's not hard. Furthermore, meta descriptions are really only for pages with crappy content where spiders can't get a good description from the on page content. Basically a way to entice visitors to click....

I am with DMOZ. Under 50.

Just include a BRIEF description, and some keywords, and you are good to go.

how can description be classified as spam? Spam is a verb that describes to indiscriminately send unsolicited, unwanted, irrelevant, or inappropriate messages, especially commercial advertising in mass quantities.

That's one meaning. It's also a verb to describe the "spammed" email/message itself.

Over time the term "spam" has evolved and can be described as any over-worded means to advertise, or gain in a pestering way.

Example: A guy trying to sell his armor in an online game could "spam" the chat:

    "Selling [armor] PST!!"
    "Selling [armor] PST!!"
    "Selling [armor] PST!!"
    "Selling [armor] PST!!"
    "Selling [armor] PST!!"

    ... you get the point.

there is no limit but if you make it so long all of the big search engines may consider it as spam. i think description between 60-100 chracter is great for the description

Ok, with Meta Description less isn't always best.

Try to hit 150 characters including spaces. The reason is Google uses the Description snippet in it's index, if you have less then 150 it may dig in to your page content to make up the rest.

So you may end up with something like:

Buy Our Widgets here Home Contact About Us Click to Email

For example, have a look at This

That's probably Australia's most popular internet/tech forum, it's even got it's own site links in Google. However have a look at it's Meta Description, not real enticing to click on is it? Because Google dipped in to the page content.
