How many characters is a good rule of thumb to stay under when writing the description and keyword meta tags?

Don't have an exact number. Just keep the title short enough to fit at the top of the browser and make the meta description long enough that SEs that use it like MSN will not grab other content from your page because it wasn't long enough. Don't get carried away with your meta keywords either.

There's no hard fixed number to stick by, just dont go overboard with it as it'll look spammy.

Just focus more on making it eye-catchy and interesting...And don't overstuff them with too much keywords.

Go to the search engines you use. Do a search for anything. How many words can you read in the description. Make that your average.

Write readable enticing keyword rich descriptions for each page you want to rank. Don't duplicate descriptions through out your site.

Pick a few of the most important keywords and just go with that. There is no advantage to stuffing in 100 keywords.

You people need to look at the date of the original post. If the OP hasn't figured out the answer to their question after 3 years then I doubt they ever will.
