Go with Dell. I like the idea of ordering online and receiving the product direct from their factory.

It's also bit cheaper because there's no 'middle man' involved.

I personally have had better luck with HP, but I haven't used HP or Dell products in so long that their products may have changed over time.

I would never buy an HP laptop ever ever again.
I have had 3 in the past and ALL 3 of them did nothing but crash.
I took them back after 14 days. Yes! They never lasted more than 2 weeks.
Dell on the other hand are very good! I would recommend Toshiba though. ;)

Judge based on the model number rather than brand. Some are decently made with decent battery life but lesser warranty and build quality. Some are pretty "okay" but solid on support. Some are crappy on all fronts. Seen many models with battery life that decreases after using for 1 year and the hinges getting "loose".

Also, you can't judge a company based on past experience. Then again, we're in a country where service screws up the reputation of a brand. Do you have any specific needs? budget? Usage?

I prefer Dell. I have had so so many issues with HP in the office lately. Trying to uninstall their printer drivers to install a different one is next to impossible even with their provided utilities. I would say Dell for sure.

Definitely Dell. I used to have an HP and it was really, really crappy. I've never had ANY problems with Dell laptops.

If you're tight with money then I would get the HP but whenever we've had some kind of HP product, it ends up breaking or not working right. The HP Printer is a pain in the you know what. We've not had any problems or major issues with Dell :) I do know of someone who's in love with HP and she has never had any problems with them. It's just all what you're use to and needing in a computer.

For me HP is better. They provide more quality products, but they prices are bit higher. Dell is also good because they are cheaper.

I must agree with you about the battery problems. I have the Dell Convertible and the one thing I don't like is the low battery life with it so I keep it on the dock 80% of the time because of it but other then that, I love it.

battery life is a major factor when you don't have electricity for 10 hours per day :p

Yes, the convertible only has like 4-5 hours of battery life. In the morning or when I'm away from my computer and just gone for a couple of hours the battery goes extremely fast and I mainly use it for email and article writing - it's not like I'm doing loads on it.
