Deleting page and creating a new page

I created a page on my wordpress blog ie site.com/pagename
I did some back linking and it got high in the rankings but then fell off (I believe due to stopping the back linking) and hasn't recovered. Would there be any penalty if I created a new page ie site.com/thepagename with the exact same content and deleted the old page and then started backlinking that page with the same keywords I was going for before?

Just update the old page, add more content to it, show it to the social networks and renew your link building campaign. You are writing for your visitors not for Google. Remember it.

Thanks for the reply. The only thing is that the page is where I'm selling something so I won't really be updating it. That's why I'm doing the back linking to get it high in the search rankings.

Just add some text that may help your visitors, a few lines would do it, give what Google wants: Content. Moreover, you should also post your page in identi.ca, buzz and twitter. With this, Google will find out that your page is getting promoted in social networks and therefore you can continue your link building without trouble. This is kind of a set of steps to follow to make it look natural, completely white hat.
Once you renew your link building do not stop!!
