Delete old files once 301 redirect is setup?

I've been searching all over for an answer to this simple question....

After I have setup a 301 redirect in my .htaccess file should I delete the old .html files that are no longer needed from the server?
From my understanding of what a 301 redirect does it shouldn't matter either way but I just wanted to make sure I'm not messing anything up with the search engines.

Thanks for your time and help

Hi, yes, you can go ahead with deleting the old html files, although, if i were you i would always keep a backup copy of them just in case you ever need them again.

Thanks Deadsquirrel :) I will definitely keep a backup of the the files. I'll delete them tomorrow or the next day unless someone out there knows of any reason not to delete the files. Thanks again
