Definition of an "access point"

Can anyone tell me what an “access point” is with regards to external links on one’s website and provide some examples?

I’ve been searching for definitions and it seems that most of them are related to wireless technologies, which is not the context that I’m interested in. I’m more interested in the context of the term as it relates to marketing.

    Thanks!

I have never heard the term "access point" used in reference to websites other than what you said you found about WiFi... Did you read this somewhere?

Anyway, the only thing I can think of that you might be referring to is more commonly called a "landing page" and that is simply the page that a visitor first sees when they visit your site. If they type in the url of your site directly then the 'landing page' will be whatever you have setup for your index page. However, if you are advertising your site or a particular product you can get people to visit a certain page by using that url instead...

For example if your site is xyz.com and you sell cheese you might want to create a specific landing page for a new type of cheese or a special sale. So when you are marketing/advertising this sale you would tell people to visit xyz.com/special to get the special offer.
