Defining Your Target Market

    Hi all,

    I work at an advertising firm here in Chicago, and it's amazing how much information they can pull on group of people. For example, if an advertiser wants to cater toward 20-30 year old Hispanic women, the company has programs that will tell, from survey results, that these women read Cosmo, like to cook, and want to go skiing once in their life. Makes it really easy to target advertise.

    My question though, is how do you think that companies determine that, in that example, that 20-30 year old Hispanic women will be the most likely to purchase their product? Because I'm in a band based in Chicago, and currently have no idea what group of people our music would draw the most positive response from. "Everyone" I don't think ever works!

    I would like some ideas on how to start focusing, so I can build our website/marketing look & feel around what we come up with. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

    Well first start small. Are children (under 13) going to like your music? What about retired people (over 65)?

    So start with age. I have no idea what kind of music you play but let me give a small example. Let's say you are (heaven forbid) a country music band that focuses on banjo playing.

    Ok, so ages of those listening would easily be 5 - 80, but the majority of people who want to hear it and would buy your cds or listen to you on the radio would be in the south or 'country' areas. Those who can actually afford your cd might be between 17 - 45.

    See how the window gets smaller?

    Then are they mostly male or female? I'd say mostly male.. but that's just me.

    So now you have your major buying group as males between 17 - 50 living in southern / country states in the US.

    You might even want to move the age down a bit because 50 might be too old. Look around at your crowd that comes to hear you and you'll know the age group.

    I've seen a few bands play before both small time and concert and the average crowd seems to be between 15 - 35.

    Good idea. We were actually thinking 15-30, so pretty much right on mark.

    Hm, so you could start off by designing for young adults/high school kids, then as you play more shows could start to narrow that range to focus the target market even more?

    I remember coming across a link many many years ago when I was too dumb. It's was an American stats website that listed everything of the demographic...so, something like age 30-40 who have diabetes are also likely to have ...... It was quite helpful actually..I mean, imagine you had a diabetes list..you could easily promote them something else..

    Although lot of it is common sense, there were things that you could have never thought about.

    I haven't found the link after I decided to do something useful with it. Hopefully some day.
