I need a subniche, can't compete with the big players, but not sure how to do this. I want to do a weight loss/natural health site with a mailing list, but probably only because I want to promote a new natural weight loss that has been recently mentioned on CNN, Oprah magazine, etc. I'm not sure if I should make the site based around this product, or make a general weight loss site, so that I can have other affiliate products to offer. But on the other hand, this is a product that is purchased over and over. When I type the product name into a google search, it gets 8 million hits, so maybe I shouldn't even try for such a competitive market. When I google search health supplements, natural diet supplements, variations on phrases like that, I'm getting 350,000 or so. I thought of adding in some spirituality concepts and resources too, but I don't want to scare off people who are not open to spiritual things, so maybe I should stick to excercise, weight loss and natural health, but it seems too general..? Do I need to target further? Maybe I could make a second list or site just for spiritually minded people looking to loose weight? I don't think I have the analytical skills to find this through keywords, nor woulld I know what to look for. Does anyone have a suggestion? I know of goodkeywords.com (but it's a windows only tool and I'm on a mac) and Adwords analyzer but not sure what to do with it. Thanks in advance.
Focus on one specific product. If you are promoting an affiliate offer that sells "Weight Loss Pill X", buy a domain name with some keywords in it and create a small site specifically focused on "Weight Loss Pill X". This is the only way that you'll be able to compete with the big guys. Write as much content about the weight loss pill as you can - try to have a good 10 unique ~400 word articles on your site for good SEO purposes.
