   I find myself having to click on the 'start date' for the most recent posts, is there a way to default this action or does it only go by most recent comments?

   Where exactly are you seeing "Start Date" link? When I click on "New Posts", it shows new posts as expected: https://forums.digitalpoint.com/find-new/posts
